Consulting

When the energy contract expires, the decision has to be right.

Structured procurement of electricity and natural gas — from the first overview to a decision-ready award recommendation.

Starting situation

Three months to contract expiry — what now?

The typical starting point: an energy-intensive industrial company with a small number of large sites — and energy costs that materially affect the bottom line. The electricity or natural-gas contract expires in roughly three months.

Two questions now decide the outcome: Is the price in line with the market? And which contractual risks are hidden in the offer? This is exactly where my consulting comes in.

Common pitfalls

Where procurement decisions go wrong

Three points where tenders fail again and again in practice.

1

Offers cannot be compared cleanly

Different price formation, commitment periods, and volume or tolerance bands turn a direct comparison into guesswork.

2

Terms look acceptable — but are not

Seemingly good terms can hide excessive costs or risks: in the product, on the spot market, or in balancing energy.

3

Alternative procurement models go unused

The opportunities and risks of tranche and other procurement models are hard to assess without market knowledge.
